Educator Endorsements

 

Overview

Endorsements may attach to a license area of concentration. Content endorsements may attach to Elementary Education and Secondary Education. If attached to Elementary Education, the educator is qualified to teach 7th and 8th grade in a middle school. To be eligible for an endorsement, you must already have a current Utah Educator License.

There are two documents associated with most endorsements:  the application and the specs document. The specs document outlines all competencies and pathways for demonstrated competency.  The application document is what educators submit that indicate which option was selected for each competency area.  The requirements for an Associate level endorsement are found on the Specs document.  Competency-Based Endorsements Flyer

If you have already started working toward the professional requirements for a Retiring Endorsement Application, you may submit the retiring application for professional approval prior to June 30, 2025.

Application Submission

All Educator Endorsement Applications must be submitted digitally to SM Apply  https://usbelicensing.smapply.us. Tutorial available at https://ior.ad/994G

All original digital transcripts must be submitted (via Clearinghouse) to transcripts@schools.utah.gov.

Specs -  The document outlines all information related to that specific endorsement.  It provides the competencies required to earn the endorsement, preapproved pathways and course options for demonstrated competency, and requirements to earn the Associate level endorsement.

Retired Endorsements

Beginning July 2021, Utah’s educator endorsements were designed through the lens of educator competencies that embody the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to teach in a particular area of concentration. These newly designed endorsements pathway options may include university coursework, microcredentials, certification exams, and other available options for demonstrating competency.

Retiring Endorsement Applications are accepted until June 30, 2025.  In order to use the retiring endorsement application, educators must have started required courses prior to June 30, 2023.  Please be aware that many universities have aligned their courses to the new competency-based endorsements and may not be accepted with the retiring endorsement application.
