Overview
Artificial Intelligence (AI), as defined in the Utah State Board of Education’s AI
Framework, is “computer systems that are taught to automate tasks normally requiring
human intelligence.” Generative AI systems in education can help educators and learners
create documents, refine data, and collaboratively create materials. Generative AI
systems are a developing technology whose output may be inaccurate, misleading, or
incomplete. USBE’s Steering Committee for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) monitors
AI in education for potential benefits and to safeguard students and educators from
harm created by AI.
To help stakeholders better understand the purpose of AI in education, USBE provides
guidance in the form of the Artificial Intelligence Framework for Utah P-12 Education:
Guidance on the Use of AI in Our Schools. This document explores many of the current
issues facing students, teachers, and parents in schools across Utah. The Artificial
Intelligence Framework for Utah P-12 Education is a living document and will be reviewed
and updated as new trends and information emerge.
