Welcome to Artificial Intelligence
Overview
Artificial Intelligence (AI), as defined in the Utah State Board of Education’s AI Framework, is “computer systems that are taught to automate tasks normally requiring human intelligence.” Generative AI systems in education can help educators and learners create documents, refine data, and collaboratively create materials. Generative AI systems are a developing technology whose output may be inaccurate, misleading, or incomplete. USBE’s Steering Committee for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) monitors AI in education for potential benefits and to safeguard students and educators from harm created by AI.
To help stakeholders better understand the purpose of AI in education, USBE provides guidance in the form of the Artificial Intelligence Framework for Utah P-12 Education: Guidance on the Use of AI in Our Schools. This document explores many of the current issues facing students, teachers, and parents in schools across Utah. The Artificial Intelligence Framework for Utah P-12 Education is a living document and will be reviewed and updated as new trends and information emerge.

USBE offers employees access to AI systems to help with productivity. Employees can learn more at the IT Help Desk page on AI.
Portrait of an AI-Infused Educator and Learner
Utah's Portrait of a Graduate identifies the ideal characteristics of a Utah graduate after going through the K-12 system. Utah’s Portrait of an AI-Infused Educator and Learner are designed to be extensions of Utah’s Portrait of a Graduate that share the key knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be a safe, effective user of artificial intelligence.
These are aspirations not necessarily meant to be quantified and measured. These characteristics begin at home and are cultivated in educational settings.
The AI-Infused Learner: Foundations for Future-Ready Learning
Utah’s Portrait of an AI-Infused Educator identifies the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for appropriate artificial intelligence (AI) use by an learner in Utah classrooms. AI is a consistently growing and changing technology, but any educator utilizing these knowledge, skills, and dispositions will be able to appropriately navigate AI in education and how to best support their learners with AI. By appropriately keeping a human in the AI system we can close the AI divide and build appropriate responses to future AI technologies.
