Regulatory Sandbox in Education
The Regulatory Sandbox in Education (S.B. 191, 2022, Utah State Legislature), allows traditional public and charter schools schools in Utah can create new and innovative education programs and allows schools to ask the State Board of Education for permission waive Board rules inhibiting enactment of the innovative program.
To help pay for these programs, schools can use some of the money that the state usually restricts for other things. They can also accept private donations. If a charter school wants to start one of these programs, the agreement between the school and the people who authorized it must be updated.
The State Board of Education will keep track of all the approved programs and can stop a program if needed. They will also report to the Education Interim Committee on how these programs are using state money and which programs are running.
