Period Products in Schools

In 2022, the Utah State Legislature enacted Title 53G-4-413: Required Provision of Period Products in Schools. This statute requires local school boards and charter school governing boards to provide free period products in each female or unisex restroom that students use beginning July 1, 2022. The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) Administrative Rules R277-931: Required Provision of Period Products in Schools further clarifies that period products be provided in school restrooms for grades 1-12.

To address the cost of the requirements of this section, a Local Education Agency (LEA) shall use funds that the Legislature appropriated specifically to provide period products. Funding will be distributed to LEAs through a USBE competitive grant. All period product purchases must be made July 1, 2023, through December 31, 2024, to qualify for reimbursement.
LEAs are required to incorporate the provision of period products into local ongoing capital operations and maintenance budgets no later than July 1, 2025.
