The Governing Board of a charter school may participate in the School LAND Trust program in one of two roles: as the school’s Charter Council or as the program’s approving entity.

When serving as the approving entity, the Governing Board is responsible for establishing election procedures, communicating with parents and the school community about the use of School LAND Trust funds, and reviewing both the prior year Final Report and the upcoming year School LAND Trust Plan. The Board also provides guidance on academic priorities and may offer training and support for Charter Councils and Principals.

  • Provide meaningful input on school-specific issues.
  • Review and analyze school data to identify areas where students excel and where improvement is needed.
  • Identify areas of need by pinpointing specific academic gaps and challenges faced by students in the school.
  • Develop a School LAND Trust Plan that outlines how funds will be used to support student needs and improve academic achievement. This includes:
    • Setting goals
    • Defining academic area(s) of focus
    • Establishing how progress will be measured
    • Outlining action steps
    • Determining expenditures

  • Establish Election Procedures that meet the requirements of the law.
  • Ensure the school website includes all required postings and is updated regularly.
  • Review the School Land Trust Plan for the upcoming year.
  • Receive the Council Signature Form during the plan review process.
