Mentor Journeyworker
The Utah Registered Apprenticeship Program for Teachers (U-RAPT) has two phases, the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship. In each of these phases, the apprentice is provided an expert mentor journeyworker to support them as they become a certified paraeducator or professionally licensed teacher.
Paraeducator Journeyworker
In the U-RAPT program, a paraeducator journeyworker is a key mentor figure for pre-apprentices. They are experienced paraprofessionals who guide and support pre-apprentices as they gain classroom experience and work towards their associate's degree.
What makes a paraeducator journeyworker special?
- Experienced: They have a solid background working in classrooms, likely as a paraprofessional, and have demonstrated competence in their role.
- Knowledgeable: They are familiar with the Utah Standards for Instructional Paraeducators and can help pre-apprentices develop the necessary skills.
- Mentoring skills: They are skilled at guiding and supporting adult learners in a classroom setting.
- Dedicated to the program: They are committed to helping pre-apprentices succeed in the U-RAPT program and their future teaching careers.
Paraeducator journeyworkers serve as a mentor who bridges the gap between the pre-apprentice's current skills and the competencies they need to become a teacher. They provide practical guidance, support, and feedback within the classroom environment.

Mentor Journeyworker Teacher
A Mentor Journeyworker Teacher in the U-RAPT program is a highly qualified and experienced teacher who takes on the crucial role of mentoring and guiding apprentices. They are essentially the apprentice's primary support and instructor in the classroom.
What distinguishes a Mentor Journeyworker Teacher?
- Licensed and experienced: They hold a Utah Professional Educator License in the same subject area the apprentice wants to teach and have at least 3 years of teaching experience.
- Skilled in coaching or mentoring: They have an endorsement in either Instructional Coaching or Teacher Mentoring, meaning they have extra training in how to effectively support adult learners.
- Teacher of record: Mentor journeyworker teachers serve as the teacher of record in the classroom where the apprentice works, providing daily oversight and guidance.
- Dedicated to the program: They are committed to helping apprentices develop the skills and competencies needed to become successful teachers.
Mentor journeyworker teachers are master teachers who not only provide instruction to students but also impart their expertise and experience to the apprentice. They model best practices, provide feedback, and create a supportive learning environment for both their students and the apprentice.
