DEFINITION
School-based enterprises allow students to put into practice what they learn in the classroom by running an actual small businesses. The money generated from the business can be used to fund student organizations, materials, equipment, facilities, improvement and other items necessary to maintain or improve the program or school. While participating in these activities, students learn overall business operations such as managing costs, ordering supplies, working under pressure, conserving supplies and maintaining facilities. The Junior Achievement Program can assist a school in setting up a school-based enterprise.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY

  • All students K-12 are eligible
  • Be in good standing and receive prior approval
  • Student must complete required forms

LIABILITY EXPOSURE
Work site liability is the responsibility of the respective school district in an unpaid experience. Utah state law provided for the school district's worker's compensation insurance to cover non-paid student learners.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meet performance and attendance standards set by the school
  • Show honesty, punctuality, a cooperative attitude, proper grooming and a willingness to learn
  • Complete training requirements
  • Complete job assignments and meet supervisors' expectations
  • Complete and return required forms
  • Display polite and courteous behavior
  • Follow safety procedures
  • Report accidents, injuries or concerns to school supervisor/work supervisor

SCHOOL SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Obtain completed forms
  • Provide time to orient, train and give feedback to the student
  • Set schedules and make assignments
  • Supervise operation of school-based enterprise
