State Mathematics Education Coordinating Committee (SMECC)

SMECC is a group of district mathematics coordinators, university professors, and charter school representatives in Utah. SMECC meets three to four times per year for statewide collaboration, professional development, and discussion of mathematics issues. Participation is limited to those in mathematics leadership positions in local educational agencies. The SMECC mailing list is the primary means of disseminating current information. Contact joleigh [dot] honey[at]schools [dot] utah [dot] gov(Joleigh Honey) for more information regarding this committee.

Common Core State Standards

In August 2010, The Utah State Board of Education (USBE) adopted the K-12 Utah Core Standards for Mathematics and English Language Arts.  The Utah State Office of Education (USOE) then worked with Utah educators and various stakeholders to determine the best approach in using the standards in ways that would meet the unique needs of Utah students.  USOE continues to work on implementation plans and support documents.  The Utah Core was implemented in grades 6 and 9 in 2011, grades K-7, 9-10 in 2012, and was implemented in all grades in the 2013-2014 school year.

Statements of Support

The Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS), an umbrella organization of sixteen professional mathematics and mathematics education societies, has issued a statement from their presidents formally supporting the Common Core for Mathematics (Read Statement). These organizations have the primary objective of increasing mathematical knowledge and are committed to mutual support in efforts to promote research, improve education, and expand the uses of mathematics.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), is committed to helping educators interpret and understand the Common Core State Standards and has issued their own statement of support (Read Statement).
